My World - the process - 2003 and 2004

In 2003 we started this project for young refugees and Dutch children, because we felt the urge to do something about the understanding of refugees and their children. Our goal was to give these children more face and voice to tell the world who they are. The lifestory of refugee children consists of much more than the story of their flight alone. A lifestory tells other people who you are, what you like to do and what your future dreams are. You can carry your story anywhere in the world to tell others about yourself.
Fortunately we had a great working space at the asylum centre Zeeburg in Amsterdam. For many weeks we worked with the children to get their lifestory told. We asked three professional photographers (Martijn van de Griendt, Piet den Blanken and Marije van der Hoeven) to tell the children about their work and to teach them the essentials of photography. With the help of painter José Boomsma the children painted portrets and collages. All together a wonderfull experience.

A manual of My World (written in dutch) can be ordered; please write me an e-mail.
